Ms Martorell was born in Madrid in 1978. She holds a degree in Psychology from the Universidad Pontificia de Comillas (First Class Honours, 1996–2001), a PhD from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Cum Laude, 2011), and an Executive MBA degree from the IE Business School (honours degree, 2009). Additional qualifications include the Board of Directors Programme at ESADE (2022), a specialisation diploma in Quantitative Research Methodology and Statistical Techniques, a Diploma of Advanced Studies (DEA) in Research Proficiency, and a Diploma in Socratic Philosophy.
Since 2007, she has worked at Fundación A LA PAR, a benchmark organisation in the field of intellectual disabilities. She served as General Manager until 2016 and has since held the role of Executive President. Under her leadership, the foundation has promoted pioneering initiatives such as the UAVDI (Support Unit for Victims with Intellectual Disabilities) and the DIEM mental health programme, achieving high levels of professionalisation and sustainability through its own business models.
She has led collaborative projects with both national and international organisations, transforming the foundation into an independent, innovative, and socially committed institution. Prior to this, she practised as a psychologist at the foundation’s Occupational Centre and the Special Education School, and was an FPU research fellow at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.
Ms Martorell combines her institutional activities with teaching on postgraduate programmes and specialised courses. She has co-supervised doctoral theses and published numerous academic and outreach articles. She has also acted as a peer reviewer, directed a radio programme on disability, and volunteered with former child soldiers in Sierra Leone and Peru. She undertook research placements at King’s College London (2005) and Harvard University (2006), both funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education.
She has been recognised as one of Spain’s Top 100 Women Leaders (2023), listed among the 25 most influential figures in the third sector by Merca2, in 2023 and 2024, and ranked among the 500 most influential Spaniards by Merca2 (2023). Among other honours, she has received the Cross for Police Merit with white badge (2019), the Yo Dona Award for Best Social Entrepreneur (2012), and other several awards recognising social innovation and disability research.
