The earthquake, measuring 6.8 in magnitude, has killed more than 2,800 people, thousands are injured and numerous people are still trapped under the rubble. This is the most powerful earthquake to hit the country in atleast a century, and it is expected that the number of victims and affected individuals will increase in the coming hours as rescue teams progress and reach previously cut-off areas. The constructions and buildings in the affected areas lack the necessary structural integrity to withstand tremors, increasing the risk of collapses and casualties. Additionally, there are hundreds of seriously injured individuals in need of medical care.

In response to this situation, the NGOs that are part of the Emergency Committee (Aldeas Infantiles SOS, Educo, Médicos del Mundo, Oxfam Intermón, Plan International, and World Vision) are conducting initial assessments and organizing their emergency response in the locations where they are present. They are focusing their efforts on providing shelter, food, education, water and sanitation, and medical assistance either directly or through local partner organizations.

Now more than ever, the assistance provided by the Spanish Emergency Committee and its member NGOs is crucial to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected by the consequences of the earthquake in Morocco.

This is done to provide society with information on how to help in each case and to assist in fundraising efforts.

Emergency Committee

The Emergency Committee was born in 2015 to offer a rapid response mechanism in emergency situations that allows increasing citizen support in different humanitarian crises, acting as a permanent link between NGOs, companies, media and citizens, increasing social trust in NGOs in emergency situations, accounting for the impact of the action and acting jointly as a reference for emergency aid to society.
