The earthquake has left hundreds of people dead and more than 2,500 injured. Search and rescue operations, damage assessments and assistance to those affected are ongoing in the hardest-hit areas, while the number of casualties and humanitarian needs continue to evolve.

In response to the situation, seven of the NGOs that make up the Spanish Emergency Committee — Action Against Hunger, SOS Children’s Villages, Entreculturas, Doctors of the World, Oxfam Intermón, Plan International and World Vision — have activated or are preparing their response efforts to assist those most affected.

The main needs identified at this stage include temporary shelter and support for families whose homes have been damaged or rendered uninhabitable, access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene, as well as essential supplies, food and basic goods, child protection, healthcare, and psychological and psychosocial support.
